Nicki Belville van Vonno is a native of West Virginia. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Speech (Drama) and English from Marshall University in Huntington. She received a Master's Degree in City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
She began her local county government career with Martin County in 1988. Martin County is a strong proponent of growth management and environmental protection, and has been in the forefront of Florida planning since the early 1970s when it began to adopt environmental and development controls, and began acquiring conservation, beach and park lands. She became Director of the Martin County Growth Management Department in October 1999. Her areas of interest and expertise include Growth Management, Sustainable development practices, Community and redevelopment planning, and housing and her department has received numerous awards under her leadership, including a 2006 National Association of Counties (NACO) for Martin County's creation of a Rural Heritage designation within the County's Future Land Use map, a 2006 Florida Chapter American Planning Association Award for the Indiantown CRA Overlay Zoning District Ordinance, and a 2005 NACO award for the Heritage Park/FEMA Intermediate Housing Project.
